WALTER BONATTI. STATI DI GRAZIA

22-06-2021 / 20-02-2022
Walter Bonatti. Stati di grazia

On 22nd June, 2021, the National Mountain Museum of Torino opens the exhibition Walter Bonatti. Stati di grazia”, dedicated to the great mountaineer and explorer on the tenth anniversary of his death.

The exhibition, open to the public until 5th December, focuses on a new narrative thread which, starting with Bonatti’s stories and some considerations gathered directly from his words, investigates his relationship with the natural environment. He was attracted by adventure, but not only that: he immersed himself in the great wilderness to the point of merging with it and in some circumstances experienced what he called “states of grace”, exceptional moments capable of awakening unknown forces within him and pushing him beyond his limits. The same convictions that had led him to renounce technical innovations in the mountains in order to return to the pre-war mountaineering tradition, encouraged him to approach “ferocious” animals without weapons, to share experiences of daily life with indigenous peoples and to confront, in the most remote places, the memory of a primordial world.

We encounter genuine icons along the exhibition route: mountaineering equipment from Walter’s early years, the paddle from his first trip to the Yukon for “Epoca”, some of the machetes used during his adventures in the jungle and forests, and letters and pages from his diaries and notebooks. And then some “Bonattian” environments: first of all the mountains, with a large multimedia setting dedicated to the Grand Capucin; glaciers, forests and volcanoes are the focus of three “immersive” rooms that use scenographic installations to recreate certain sensations from those environments; finally, there is a reconstruction of a corner of Walter’s studio in Dubino, in Valtellina, with his typewriter and books.

It is necessary to make a reservation to visit the exhibition.
