Regio Opera Festival

From 7 June to 17 September 2022, the Regio Theatre moves for the second edition of the Regio Opera Festival to the splendid Courtyard of Arsenale Palace, the evocative 18th-century headquarters of the Army Training Command and Application School.

The second half of the 19th century is the great protagonist of the summer. On 7, 9 and 11 June, the Festival opens with Cavalleria rusticana, Pietro Mascagni’s masterpiece directed by Gabriele Lavia; in the cast: Anastasia Boldyreva, Stefano La Colla, Misha Kiria and Agostina Smimmero conducted by maestro Francesco Ivan Ciampa.

On 21, 23 and 26 another masterpiece: Carmen by Georges Bizet; on the podium the very welcome return of the Israeli conductor Daniel Oren, starring Ketevan Kemoklidze, Jean-François Borras, Rosa Feola and Zoltán Nagy, narrator Yuri D’Agostino. This production, directed by Paolo Vettori, features adaptation and texts by Regio Artistic Director Sebastian F. Schwarz.

Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca will be performed on 5, 7 and 10 July in a Regio Theatre production co-produced with the City Theatre of Bologna, directed by Daniele Abbado and conducted by Stefano Ranzani. The cast features the great Maria Agresta in the title role, with Giorgio Berrugi and Elchin Azizov next to her.

Also in July, on 26, 28 and 30, opera buffa and director Mariano Bauduin return, presenting one of the last great successes in the history of the genre: Don Checco by Nicola De Giosa. Conductor is Maestro Francesco Ommassini, and performers include Domenico Colaianni and Michela Antenucci.

Protagonists of all evenings are Orchestra, Choir and Children’s Voices Choir of the Regio Theatre.

New entry is dance, the protagonist of September: on 8 and 10 Svetlana Zakharova, étoile of the Bol’šoj and the Scala Theatre, beloved by the public, celebrated by critics and in demand at the worldìs major theatres, will perform together with her husband Vadim Repin, acclaimed violinist and conductor. Alongside the ‘prima ballerina assoluta’ will be international ballet stars Mikhail Lobukhin, Denis Savi, Vjačeslav Lopatin and Jacopo Tissi.

Closing the festival, on 14, 15 and 17, is the Béjart Ballet Lausanne engaged in The Firebird, on the orchestral suite by Igor Stravinsky, and in Tous les hommes presque toujours s’imaginent. In the first choreography, Maurice Béjart nourishes, feeds and revolutionises this great 20th century classic; the second ballet was born from the encounter between Gil Roman, artistic director of the Béjart Ballet, and John Zorn, one of the greatest contemporary American musicians and composers. The Regio Theatre Orchestra will perform the music of both ballets live.
