Great athletics returns to Sestriere!
After a long pause, during which the track was rebuilt with a new very fast surface, the Sestriere Meeting returns on Saturday 22 June with a renewed look and the ambition to regain its place on the international scene thanks to unique environmental conditions.
The event, in the year of its relaunch, is thus proposed as an event of the highest level, capable of attracting the best athletes from all over the world just one week before the deadline to obtain the Olympic pass.
The meeting at Sestriere was one of the most iconic events in world athletics between the 1980s and 1990s, with the greatest stars put in the optimum conditions (such as altitude and wind) to perform at their best in the name of spectacle: Mike Powell’s stellar 8.99, Heike Drechsler’s 7.63, Sergey Bubka’s world record. All the greatest athletes in the history of athletics climbed to the Colle: Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Merlene Ottey, Ben Johnson, Calvin Smith, Fiona May, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Evelyn Ashford...
The meeting programme includes the whole range of sprint events (100, 200, 400 m), as well as the high hurdles (110hs for men and 100hs for women). These events will be joined by the long and triple jumps.
A total of 12 events will enable the Sestriere Meeting to enter the World Athletics ranking.
